How to launch into the world of IOT?

21.10.2020

The Internet of things, IoT, has been around for many years now. The latest term being used to describe the whole IoT ecosystem is the ‘Global Data Sphere’. This term refers to the value-adding services in the cloud, data storage, Edge Computing, integrations and the integrated devices themselves – represented as a connected service chain. The International Data Centre (IDC) estimates, that by 2025, every 18 seconds there will be at least 75% of the global population connected to this Data Sphere in some way. It is estimated that IoT devices currently produce 90 Zettabytes of data, which is thought to double in size when processed further.

Knowledge is power when it is used to make decisions that are timed right, and nowadays this preferably happens automatically. How will your business take the next leap to becoming a modern and proactive company, working automatically and driven by information? Read the top tips from our rock star Jake.

OK, SO WE HAVE A TRADITIONAL BUSINESS, BUT WHAT NEXT?

You might have produced physical devices for your customers without connecting them to the outside world. Your product solves a problem for your customer and that is why it exists. But what if your products could increase your sales via other means than just doing its job well once delivered to the customer? Could you perhaps create more value for your customer by providing new service possibilities?

An experienced partner will help you to decide whether the best way to add value for the customer is to start collecting data through IoT sensoring, or to create intelligent solutions. Either approach can add value, but it’s good to bear in mind, for example, the cost of sensoring and consider if the benefits of data capture alone will be seen in the sales margin. Perhaps you can offer the customer a solution straight away that they are ready to pay for?

WE ALREADY HAVE SENSORS IN PLACE AND LOADS OF DATA, BUT WE ARE NONE THE WISER FOR IT…

You have been living in the IoT already for years and lots of data’s been captured, but apart from that one-week internship by an engineering student nobody has really done anything with it. What’s the best way to approach this mass of data? Should the essential elements be used to develop your own operations or to provide customers with new services?

Again, with an experienced partner you can speed up either of these approaches. Experience from previous projects helps us find new business models and get results out of the data.

WE HAVE DATA, WE HAVE DEVICES, BUT WE’RE NONE THE WISER – WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO?

OK, so you’ve tried everything and still no luck? You wanted to improve preemptive maintenance, the durability of parts, and production efficiency, but found no measurable benefits? How about we try completely new kinds of service models, and – instead of selling only machines – start selling value adding services as well? Or you could build new maintenance models based on machine-learning and enable existing customers to share the use of more expensive machines? This is another situation where a partner who has a background in many different industries can really help.
